Episode 233: Mary Marantz

Today, I am happy to introduce you to my new friend, Mary Marantz. You are going to love Mary as much as I do. She is an author, speaker and podcast host of the Mary Marantz show who has a fascinating story of growing up in a single-wide trailer in West VA and ultimately went on to attend Yale Law School. She captures her story in her book, Dirt: Growing Strong Roots in What Makes the Broken Beautiful.

We talk about what it was like growing up in a trailer in west VA, how what she experienced growing up shaped her worth and idea of success and how we can shift our idea and expectation of success. There is so much goodness packed into this episode. I know you are going to really enjoy her story.

Takeaways:

  • Getting to the place where you don’t get your worth from achieving does not mean you become lazy. It frees you up to run faster towards the goal.

  • If all your labels were stripped away, who would be left? Who are you apart from that stuff?

  • The best stories we read—even real stories—require the protagonist to go through something hard. They have to overcome and persevere and show resilience to get through it.

  • Your past doesn’t have to be a negative in your story.

Discussion Questions:

  • What part of Mary’s story did you resonate with?

  • In what ways do you struggle with the cycle between getting what you want and then being sad that it didn’t actually give you what you wanted?

  • If the goals you are pursuing didn’t happen, what would be left? Who would you be?

  • What is something that you can take away and apply from this conversation?
