Episode 216: Larry Bilotta

We are going to continue in our relationship series. Today, Larry Bilotta joins me. Larry has been helping people in their relationships and marriages for years and his heart for doing this was birthed from his own marriage. He talks about how the first 27 years of his marriage were awful and then in year 28 something changed. They have now been married for over 40 years. We talk about his marriage and what caused it to fall apart but then what helped it change. We talk about how the messages we hear in childhood shape how we experience relationships as adults. We talk about what those message sound like, the solution to them and how to take ownership of them.

Takeaways:

  • I think the biggest takeaway for me was how important it is to change our mind about someone. I have had conversations with people both online and offline about this very thing. Parenting is the hardest relationship I have. And so, I took Larry’s advice and I have been working on writing down the good and what I love. I really do think that there is something to that. We have to change our mind. When we change our mind, we change our life. The hard part for me is that I want instant results, but this episode was a good reminder to keep going and keep working.

  • Acceptance: I accept that I’m in the ocean of against energy

  • Gratitude: I’m thankful to be in the ocean of against energy because I’m learning from the pain

  • Appreciation: what do I love about you? Top 3 things you love about that person, place or thing. How you’re focusing on love

  • Quantum forgiveness: we are good, all is forgiven and released. You forgive because you are all connected

Discussion Questions:

  • What messages do you think you heard as a child that shaped how you behave in relationships?

  • What relationship is the most difficult for you?

  • What would it look like to follow Larry’s steps of acceptance, gratitude, appreciation and forgiveness?

  • What is one thing you can do this week that was talked about in this episode?
