Episode 206: Rachel Bailey

I am happy to welcome Rachel Bailey to the table. She is a Parenting Specialist who has been serving families for over a decade. Besides being a mother of two, she also has Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology, a certification in Positive Discipline, and has provided services as an ADHD Coach, in-home mentor, and therapist. Currently Rachel teaches parents practical, long-lasting tools for raising responsible, resilient, confident children... while reducing the overwhelm and guilt in parents' lives. Can I get an AMEN?

I think we hit the parenting goldmine with this conversation. It is extremely helpful! We talk about ways to simplify parenting which includes how to become less reactionary and how to figure out which negative behaviors we need to tackle first in parenting. We take a personal example for our home which is staying in bed at night and Rachel helps come up with why this behavior is happening and what to do about it. We also talk about how fear plays a role in parenting and how to build our kids self-esteem. I’m telling you, that last segment about building self-esteem is just so good. Be ready to take some mental notes.

Takeaways:

  • Why is parenting so complicated? “We are overwhelmed and we spend so much time trying to solve problems in the moment and be a reactive parent.” We need to figure out how to take care of ourselves so that we will be in a healthier place when dealing with our kids.

  • How much does parenting have to do with us as parents rather than our kids? “How we interact with our kids is 100% based on how we are doing ourselves.”

  • "Self esteem doesn’t come from telling our kids how great they are. Self-esteem comes from how you treat your kids when you don’t agree with them." MIC DROP.

  • Think through the reason why they aren’t doing the thing you keep asking them to do. Address the why first.

Discussion Questions:

  • In what ways do you see how parenting has a lot to do with how you are doing?

  • If there is a great need for parents to care for themselves in order to parent better, what are some reasons that you don’t take care of yourself?

  • Rachel talked about the importance of having strategies to calm yourself in the moment when you are frustrated. What would that be for you?

  • What behavior do you feel like you are constantly parenting?

  • Based on this episode, is something you can do about that? How could you come up with the reason behind the behavior?

  • In what ways has fear played a role in your parenting? What story are you telling yourself about that fear?

  • What did you think about the conversation around building your kid’s self-esteem?
