Episode 202: Heather Adams

I am so happy to welcome Heather Adams to the show today. I was in Nashville this past September and was able to sit down face to face with Heather. Heather is the founder of a boutique public relations firm called Choice Media & Communications. And I’ve had the opportunity to work with her firm over the last few years and they are so kind and gracious to work with.

Not only is Heather a leader and entrepreneur but she is also a boy mom. So you know we had to talk a little bit about what she’s surviving currently as a boy mom to tweens. Then, we had a really insightful conversation about mentorship. We talked about the importance of pivotal relationships, advice she’s learned from them in regards to leading others, advice for finding a mentor and advice for being a good mentor.

    • Take inventory of your immediate community and network

    • Make specific request with why you want that person to mentor you

    • Find virtual mentors - you may not know them personally but you can read, watch or listen

  • How to be a good mentor:

    • listen more than advise

    • be invested in a longterm development rather than a short-term coffee meeting

    • limit how many mentees you have

    • be nurturing and kind but firm

  • Her last piece of advice: take care of people as human beings first.

Discussion Questions:

  • Take some time and look back on your life, who were some pivotal relationships that intersected with your life and helped shape you or push you forward?

  • Have any of these relationships been a mentor to you?

  • If you’ve ever had a mentor, how did you find that person?

  • What holds you back from mentorship?
