Episode 201: Courtney DeFeo

I am so happy to welcome Courtney DeFeo back to the show. Courtney is an OG Surviving Sarah guest making her first appearance on the show back on episode 18. She is such a creative entrepreneur who has a big heart for helping others. She is an author and podcast host for the Treasured Podcast which is a great resource for moms of girls. Courtney has partnered with Parent Cue from Orange to create a resource for moms and tween girls so that is the basis for our conversation today.

We talk about raising tween girls, the areas in which we feel inadequate to help, and even the area that we struggled with as tweens. And since we are in the throws of the holiday season, we talk about ways to make the holidays less about what we receive and more about what we give. Courtney shares some very practical and helpful ideas to light up your community during this holiday season.

Takeaways:

  • In talking about friends—be the friend you want to have.

  • Asking questions are priceless. Pause long enough to hear what they think about it. Give them space and time to share what’s on their heart and mind and try not fix it.

  • We aren’t there to smooth everything over and fix it. We need to restrain ourselves and be a safe place. Listen and ask questions so they can problem solve for themselves.

Discussion Questions:

  • Growing up, what where ages 9-11 like for you?

  • What did you love? What was a struggle?

  • If you could go back and tell yourself something at age 11, what would it be?

  • How did the problems you faced as a tween, help shape who you are today?

  • What fears or insecurities have been revealed by watching your own child walk through something?

  • What is one thing you can do today based on this conversation?
