Episode 229: Elizabeth Petters

I am so happy to welcome Elizabeth Petters to the table. I met her through her father, Pete Enns, who you may remember from being on the show. After recording, he told me that Elizabeth would be great for the show and he was absolutely right. Elizabeth is a mom to two and is passionate about breaking the stigma of mental illness in the church.

She shares her struggle with anxiety which started all the way back when she was in the 3rd grade. It was so interesting listening to her from the perspective of how I am raising girls around that age. Her story brought a lot of empathy and understanding for myself as I raise girls who struggle with anxiety. She talked about what anxiety looked like for her, what helped her move forward, how it affected her faith, advice for parents who are raising anxious kids, and what she does on a daily basis that helps her take care of herself. I’m thankful that Elizabeth shares her story and for normalizing her experience for others. Whether you are raising an anxious child or you are an anxious grown up child, I think you will resonate with her.

Takeaways:

  • We need to approach our children with listening ears, understanding and gentleness. They are just scared and trying to figure it out.

  • We need to make sure our kids know that they can do hard things. It is hard to not jump in and solve their problems or to smooth out a situation for them. I found it so interesting that what moved her towards healing was doing something hard.

Discussion Questions:

  • Have you ever struggled with anxiety? If so, what has that looked like?

  • Do you have a child that struggles with anxiety?

  • What has helped you navigate that with your child?

  • How has anxiety affected your faith?

  • What resonated with you about Elizabeth’s story?

  • What is something that you can implement in your parenting based on this conversation?
