Episode 269: Kathleen Edelman
I am happy to welcome Kathleen Edelman back to the show. She first chatted with me way back on episode 164 and I highly recommend that you go back and listen to it because it is a great foundation to our conversation today.
Kathleen is a temperament communication expert helping people become their best, authentic self and speak kindly to each other. She is the author of I Said This, You Heard That and her latest book is called A Grown-ups Guide to Kids’ Wiring.
We have such a good conversation around the temperaments and specifically parenting. You know, we are all looking for connection with our kids and Kathleen just really opens our eyes about how to do that and I think that what she says can be a game changer for our parenting.

Takeaways:
Temperaments - you naturally respond in 1 of 4 ways
Listen to the words your child says, watch their behavior, and be more curious to discover more about them.
Pause, look at the behavior and think about which innate need this is tied to.
We have to learn to listen to understand instead of listen to reply. Don’t talk too much. Listen more.
“I have a tendency to ___, but I’m going to choose to ____.” Ask: what part did I play? Then, what could I have said or done differently?
Understanding the temperaments won’t just change your parenting but it will also make your life better.
Discussion Questions:
What is something that stood out to your from this conversation?
What color do you think your temperament is?
What color do you think your kid’s temperament is?
What is something your child does that drives you crazy? What innate need do you think it could be related to?
What is a need that you have that isn’t getting met?
What is one thing you can do today based on this conversation?
