Episode 222: Sarah Stewart Holland & Beth Silvers
I am excited to welcome Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers to the table. You may know them as the hosts of the popular Pantsuit Politics podcast. They are also the authors of the book I Think You’re Wrong But I’m Listening: A Guide to Grace-Filled Political Conversations. And I want you to know that this conversation was recorded the week before everything started to shut down so again, you won’t hear a lot of conversation about COVID19.
I invited these ladies to be on the show because since 2020 is a big election year, I wanted someone to help me know how to have conversations with my kids about politics. Talking about politics in general can feel uncertain and scary but then trying to navigate those waters with your kids adds a whole other layer of vulnerability to it. I think you will find that this conversation is very helpful not just in how to talk to your kids about politics but also how to help yourself feel more confident and curious about politics.

Takeaways:
For me, I am learning that it’s very important to raise our kids to be critical thinkers and this applies to every area of life but also in politics. I want them to use their brain, to think, to question, to wonder, to be led by curiosity instead of fear.
When talking to your kids:
affirm their feelings
be curious
“here’s what I think your friend means”
Discussion Questions:
What did conversations about politics look like for you growing up?
How do you feel about politics?
Is talking about politics difficult for you? Why or why not?
What do you feel about raising kids and talking about politics?
What is one thing that you can take away from this conversation to helpful for where you are right now?
